Wijnaldum is disappointed by inefficient Orange: “Maybe we should be more eager” | NOW

Georginio Wijnaldum is happy with the Dutch national team’s victory over Latvia, but thinks the score should have been higher. As expected, the Orange was much stronger on Saturday, but won only 2-0 in the Johan Cruijff ArenA despite 37 shots.

“It took a lot of energy, because Latvia was very compact. It was quite easy to find the spaces, but I don’t know how many times the Latvians took a ball off the line,” said captain Wijnaldum in front of the camera of the US.

“Maybe we should be a bit more eager. It is good that we have created so many opportunities. We often had a bit of bad luck.”

Despite the difference in level, the team of national coach Frank de Boer had to be careful a few times in the event of a counter-punch from Latvia. Wijnaldum thinks that should not have happened and hopes that Orange will learn from it.

“In the first half there were two moments when they came through and created an opportunity. That must be better. If you are so dominant against such countries and yet you do not have your residual defenses in order … For the same money they will hit it. ”

Wijnaldum was replaced in the final phase and did not look happy, but according to the Liverpool midfielder, not too much value should be attached to this. “I was disappointed, but we shouldn’t make it bigger than it is,” he said.

“I immediately talked about it with the national coach. I had fun and felt like I could score a goal. But it’s okay. This was a good time to put other players in. It’s good for the group process.”

The Netherlands is on three points after two World Cup qualifying matches and will close the international period on Tuesday with a game against Gibraltar. The kick-off is at 8.45 pm.
