A brief, but violent intrusion
Eight people suddenly entered the hemicycle room chanting “French action!” “We had no idea what was going on, tells Gérard Onesta (EELV), vice-president of the regional council, to France 3 Occitanie. We believed for a moment in the worst. They could have been armed. For 10 to 15 seconds, we had the same images in mind. It was a moment of collective fear.”
“Cit lasted 20 seconds, but I thought of the Nanterre massacre “, he confesses to Médiacités, in reference to the irruption of a madman within the municipal council of this town of Hauts-de-Seine, on March 27, 2002, who had shot eight municipal councilors.
The Occitanie region said in a statement that no employee or elected official had been injured. The security service reacted “very quickly, with calm and composure”, underlines the administration. Images show Action Française activists being kicked out of the room by security guards.
The activists left behind a banner photographed by several regional advisers, on which we could read: “Islamo-leftists, traitors to France”. Two people were arrested by the police.
An action claimed by a far-right group
The action was claimed by the Action Française, a lively nationalist and royalist movement “by a double concern: to prepare the restoration of the monarchy and, while awaiting the return of the king, to work for the defense of the national interest “, as the group indicates in its manifesto.
This movement, which has multiplied in recent years the punches,“tried to participate in the session of the Regional Council of Occitanie, led by Carole Delga, to demonstrate [son] radical opposition to its Islamo-leftist regional policy which has lasted for years “, claimed Action Française in a press release.
The organization is specifically targeting Carole Delga (PS), who has presided over the Occitanie region since 2016 and is seeking a new mandate in the election scheduled for June. The elected maintains stormy relations with the extreme right. In 2017, she snatched the microphone from an elected National Front who cursed the left, recalls France Bleu Occitanie. After this incident, the president received death threats and filed a complaint. Carole Delga was also sentenced in 2020 for discrimination against the RN town hall of Beaucaire (Gard).
The president of the region announced that she was going to file a complaint. “Facing the far right, I repeat: I will not let go and will not give in to any pressure, wherever it comes from”, she said in a statement.
I strongly condemn the attempted violent intrusion by far-right activists which has just occurred at the Regional Council @Occitanie. I will of course file a complaint.

An intrusion without breaking and entering
After this incident, questions remain unanswered: elected officials are wondering in particular about the means used by far-right activists to enter the headquarters of the regional council, since no break-in was observed.
Access would have been through the basements using the pass of an accredited person, explains France 3. But it could also be that the activists had access to a detailed map or were guided by a person knowing the place. . A video is being studied to determine which route activists took inside the building, the region said.
An act unanimously criticized
This coup triggered an avalanche of political reactions. Emmanuel Macron denounced an action which reflects, according to him, “the true face of the extreme right” and his “will to gag democracy”.
Several elected representatives of the National Rally also condemned the action: the mayor of Perpignan, Louis Aliot, estimated in a tweet that “the violent intrusion of extremists” was worrying “for the democratic reach that it represents”. The candidate of the National Rally (RN) for the regional ones in Occitania, Jean-Paul Garraud, also condemned this action.
The violent intrusion of extremists into the regional council@Occitanieis worrying for the security of the site as well as for the democratic attack that it represents! Always privilege the debate to sectarianism! In addition to this, you need to know more about it.@RN_Occitanie https://t.co/ZKezHevQqo

On the left, criticism has been more virulent, accusing the government: “That this violent intrusion can clear the eyes of the arsonists Darmanin and others: you are fueling violence and fracturing the country”, tweeted EELV boss Julien Bayou. “Thanks to Macron, Darmanin and others for putting a target on our chests”, accuses Myriam Martin, regional advisor and member of the group La France insoumise.
French action attacked the plenary assembly #Occitanie, violently, trying to wave a banner “Islamo leftists traitors to France”.
