Waste in the Red Light District and Nieuwmarkt area collected by boats in the coming six months | NOW

The waste from residents in part of the Red Light District and Nieuwmarkt area in the center of Amsterdam will be collected by boats in the coming six months. It is a trial of the municipality.

In the streets where the waste boats are located, the waste is thrown directly into the boat from the quay. Electric carts drive in the surrounding streets to collect the garbage bags.

The trolleys bring the waste to one of the boats and dump the waste from a parking space on the waste boat. In the streets where there is often a lot of waste, there is a small garbage truck that compresses the waste.

The aim of the trial is to reduce the number of heavy refuse trucks on the canals and to make it quieter in the city center. Waternet ensures that the waste that falls or blows into the canal is immediately removed from the water. After six months, the trial will be evaluated together with residents and it is considered whether the trial can be expanded to other areas.

According to the municipality, it is the start of the removal of waste via the water. In 2019, it was tried with waste from companies, but it turned out that it was “not easy to realize”.
