Max Verstappen also set the fastest time in the second free practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix on Friday. The Limburger was slightly faster on the Bahrain International Circuit than Lando Norris in the McLaren.
Verstappen was also the fastest in his Red Bull in the first free practice. The Austrian formation seems to have come out of the winter better than in recent seasons, although the first real measurement moment with especially Mercedes is only on Saturday afternoon during qualifying.
Lewis Hamilton came to a third fastest time. He was 0.235 seconds slower than Verstappen’s 1.30.847. Norris was in the middle with a 1.30.942.
In the second practice, the drivers did not yet achieve their fastest times from the winter tests, which indicates that it can be much faster in Bahrain. For example, Verstappen drove a 1.28.960 two weeks ago, almost two seconds faster than in the second free practice. Usually a step is taken from Friday to Saturday.
Carlos Sainz came out well in the Ferrari with a fourth time and conceded 0.280 seconds to Verstappen. Valtteri Bottas completed the top five. The Finn went round in his Mercedes in a 1.31.218.
The second practice gave a further indication that the field has come closer together. The first fifteen drivers on the times list were within a second of each other.
