Mathieu van der Poel finished third in the E3 Saxo Bank Classic on Friday. Deceuninck-Quick-Step dominated the Flemish one-day race and that gave Kasper Asgreen a nice victory.
With 70 kilometers to go, Asgreen already left the front group once, after which he was taken back in the absolute final by a group including the Dutchmen Van der Poel and Dylan van Baarle. With Zdenek Stybar and Florian Sénéchal there were also two riders from Deceuninck-Quick-Step.
At 5 kilometers from the finish line, Asgreen attacked again and partly due to congestion work by Stybar and Sénéchal, the Danish champion now held his ground. He crossed the finish line with a 32-second lead over his pursuers.
In the sprint for second place, Van der Poel was beaten by Sénéchal, making the party for Deceuninck-Quick-Step complete. Van Baarle finished seventh.
