Monday March 29, schools will remain open. The new recommendation from Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer is clear: the closure of classes will be done as soon as the first case of Covid-19 is detected. Only, if the contaminations are maintained at the current rate, these closures could multiply from the beginning of the week.
In recent weeks, Pascal Charpentier, headmaster of the Lycée du Parc in Lyon (Rhône), had not closed any class. But from Monday March 29, the rule changes. One student positive for Covid-19 will be enough to send the whole class home. This is the start of a puzzle for school principals. “The Minister of National Education mentioned that from a case, classes were closed. Applied to last week, we would close nine classes here“, deplores Pascal Charpentier. In practice, the establishment would remain open but nearly a quarter of the students would be sent home.

Class closures are increasing in France, particularly in the academies of Créteil (Val-de-Marne), Versailles (Yvelines) and Nancy-Metz (Meurthe-et-Moselle and Moselle). 3,256 classes are closed, 61% more than last week. Faced with the epidemic which is progressing in schools, some parents of students see a roundabout way of the government to close schools. This sentiment is shared by teachers’ unions. The new measures will not be retroactive. Only the classes that will detect a positive Covid-19 case from Monday March 29 will close.
