The 2023 Tour de France starts in Bilbao, organization ASO announced on Friday. It will be the sixth time in ten years that the largest cycling race in the world starts outside France.
The first two stages of the 2023 edition will be held in the Basque Country. The exact route will be announced at a later date.
The Tour started once before in the Basque Country, in 1992. At the time, San Sebastian was the starting point of the Tour de France and the victory in the prologue went to Miguel Indurain.
In recent years, the Tour peloton started the three-week stage race in, among others, Yorkshire (2014), Utrecht (2015), Düsseldorf (2017) and Brussels (2019). Next year, Copenhagen will be the next non-French starting place.
This year the 108th edition of the Tour de France will be held, which will start on June 26 in Nice. Tadej Pogacar settled last year on the final day with his fellow countryman Primoz Roglic and is considered the defending champion.
