The painting depicts a man and a woman walking in front of a windmill in Montmartre at a time when the district was still a village on the outskirts of Paris. Today, the district’s street scene is dominated by the Sacré Coeur Church. Van Gogh painted the work during his two years in Paris.
The work was sold at Sotheby’s auction, according to which the sale price is the highest price paid for Van Gogh’s work in France. The auction had previously estimated the painting to be worth about 5-8 million euros.
The decisive offer was made at the last minute before the end of the tender. The identity of the buyer has not been revealed.
About $ 70 million of Van Gogh’s previous work sold at public auction was shelled out in New York in 2017.
