Josep died as a messenger, the oldest in Croatia, and a WWII veteran at the age of 109.
The former US Marine died in his hometown, in the coastal town of Celce on the Adriatic Sea (40 kilometers southeast of Rijeka), the day before yesterday.
As a messenger, he was a sailor before World War II, and when the United States entered the war, he volunteered to serve in the American forces.
As a Marine, he survived the Battle of Iwo Jima in the Pacific Ocean from 19 to 26 March 1945.
After the war, he obtained US citizenship and lived in San Francisco, where he worked as a communications engineer. And 10 years ago, he returned to his native Croatia.
