The independent game “Hades” sacred to the Bafta of video games, ahead of “The Last of Us Part II”

Independent play Hades created a surprise Thursday evening during the Bafta ceremony devoted to video games by winning the majority of awards, including the title of “Best game”, the nose and beard of the giant with 14 nominations The Last of Us Part II.

Famous as British awards dedicated to cinema and series, the Bafta have also devoted a ceremony to video games since 2004, thus choosing ten and fifteen years before the birth of their American and French counterparts (The Game awards and the Pégases) to distinguish the best productions of the video game industry.

Among the top trio with its nine nominations, the game for PC and Nintendo Switch Hades, developed by the independent Californian studio Supergiant Games, created a surprise by winning no less than five awards during this 17th edition, which took place for the second time – health context requires – entirely online.

Voted “Best Game” of the Year “, this isometric 3D action-RPG also received awards for best story, best game design, best artistic achievement and best performance in a supporting role.

With a slick character design and dungeons that follow one another at random, Hades skillfully revisits Greek mythology. The player plays there Zagreus, prince of the Underworld and son of Hades, who tries to flee the Kingdom of the dead, carefully choosing the help of several deities.

“Thank you to the Academy for this incredible honor”, rejoiced on Twitter the studio Supergiant Games, “and thank you to the gods themselves for the inspiration and no doubt their helping hand in this accomplishment !!!”.

This critically acclaimed outsider – and already honored as “best action game” and “best indie” at the Game Awards – stole the show from the giant The Last of Us Part II, which had won the most prestigious awards at the equivalent American ceremony.

This title released in June 2020 on PlayStation 4 was indeed a big favorite, with no less than 14 nominations in 11 categories: an absolute record in the history of Bafta, previously held by games Control and Death Stranding with their 11 nominations the previous year.

The Last of Us Part II will ultimately have to be satisfied with three awards: the prestigious award for best animation, that of the best performance in a leading role and the audience award (“EE Game of the year”).

For this new opus, the Californian studio Naughty Dog (a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment) had chosen to join in the continuity: we find Ellie, the heroine of the first episode, released in 2013. In a post- setting. apocalyptic, the young lesbian woman, now 19, is still fighting for her survival, her blood could save humanity ravaged after a pandemic caused by fungi.

Big disappointment also for the open-world action game Ghost of Tsushima : initially heeling The Last of Us with its 11 nominations, the offspring of Sucker Punch Productions, which takes place in feudal Japan of the Kamakura era, came away only with the prize for “best sound production”.

The eagerly awaited but also highly criticized Cyberpunk 2077 left him empty-handed, despite his initial four nominations, as did the first-person shooter Half-life: Alyx.
