The founders of the German pharmaceutical company Biontech, which developed one of the first vaccines to combat “Covid-19”, will receive the Medal of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany.
Ozlem Tureshi and Ugur Shaheen will be awarded the “Cross of the Knight Commander”, which is one of the highest honors awarded by the German state.
The prizes will be presented by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace, the presidential residence.
This is the first award that the German president personally conferred this year.
Biontech, in cooperation with its partner, the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, developed the MRNA vaccine against “Covid-19”, which was the first vaccine licensed in the European Union last December.
