the “contribution” proposed by the Church is “a scandal”, judges a victim

At the microphone of Europe 1 on Saturday, Pierre-Emmanuel Germain-Thill, one of the victims of Father Preynat, estimated that “financial compensation” for victims of pedophile crimes within the Catholic Church is a way for the institution to shirk its responsibility.

INTERVIEWThe bishops of France, gathered all week in assembly, voted Friday for the payment to the victims of pedophile crimes within the Catholic Church of a “financial contribution” the amount of which will be “lump sum”. If this measure was demanded by many associations, it is far from satisfying the victims who believe that the conditions for setting up this fund allow the institution to shirk its responsibilities. “I believe that the Church has absolutely not taken the measure of anything”, was annoyed Saturday, at the microphone of Europe 1, Pierre-Emmanuel Germain-Thill, one of the victims of Father Preynat .

“The Church plays with words”

This financial contribution “is not compensation or reparation,” said Bishop Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, president of the Conference of Bishops of France, during a press point at the end of this plenary assembly. The endowment fund will be financed by a specific appeal for donations, differentiated from other collections such as worship funds. “We are going to ask the faithful to pay for the errors of the Church, it’s a joke”, notes Pierre-Emmanuel Germain-Thill.

“The Church plays with words. Words have a meaning and these people know very well how to use them and how to communicate. Compensation means that we compensate someone for being at fault. There, in in this case, not using the word ‘compensation’ amounts to estimating that there is no fault, ”points out Pierre-Emmanuel Germain-Thill. “It is a scandal !”

A day of prayer for the victims

An independent body will be responsible for examining the requests, further indicate the bishops of France. In addition to this “financial contribution”, the prelates also validated the principle of an annual “day of prayer” in memory of the victims, demanded by the Vatican.
