What’s the best 16-inch or larger laptop? And which one has the best price-quality ratio? NU.nl and the Consumers’ Association provide an answer.
Are you rarely on the road with your laptop and are you often in the same place? Then it is usually not so bad if a laptop is slightly heavier and larger. A larger screen can be a good choice. A larger screen is also useful if you stream a lot of series on your laptop.
The Consumers’ Association tests laptops for speed, screen quality, hardware and ease of use, among other things. A total of 112 laptops have been tested and are still available. Note: due to the increased demand due to corona, availability is more limited than normal.
Within the 16 inch and larger category, an Apple laptop is the Best in the Test. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, then a laptop from HP is a good option.
Best in Test: Apple MacBook Pro 16 “2019 Silver (MVVL2N / A)
It is certainly not cheap. But within the 16-inch and larger category, this MacBook Pro beats other competitors.
The laptop is very powerful and fast. Although Apple will switch completely to its own M-series chips in the future, you certainly do not have to worry about the performance of this Intel Core i7. But if you have the slightly older 15-inch version, the differences in performance are probably too small to switch.
One reason to perhaps switch is the screen and the keyboard. The screen has become a bit bigger, while the laptop itself has not grown much. That’s because the edges around the screen are a lot smaller.
The quality of the screen is excellent. It’s not a 4K screen, but the resolution is high. Images look sharp and vivid and the screen is very bright for a laptop.
The keyboard feels nice and seems a lot more stable than that of previous MacBooks. The keyboard of previous MacBooks has received a lot of criticism, and it seems Apple has taken that criticism to heart.
The battery life is also good. With normal use such as internet and word processing, the battery lasts more than 12 hours. In addition, it has 4 USB 3 / Thunderbolt 3 ports (type c).
Alternative: HP 17-by3811nd
If you prefer a cheaper model, this HP laptop is a good alternative. It does not perform as well as the Best in the Test, but it still has excellent computing power.
What you mainly have to compromise on is the screen. The brightness, contrast and color reproduction are below par. You can work fine on it, but this is not the right laptop for photo editing or video streaming.
The laptop has a total of three USB connections, two of which are USB 3 ports. It also has a physical internet port (1 Gbit / s ethernet) and an HDMI 1.4 connection.
In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers’ Association. This is a collaboration between the independent editors of NU.nl and the Consumers’ Association.
The Consumers’ Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad. The products being tested are bought in the store so that they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.
New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction. How fast that is differs per product. The Best in the Test is the product with the best test rating. This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better. The Best Buy is the product with the best price-quality ratio.
