Partly thanks to a hat-trick by Nigel Hasselbaink, Suriname has won over Aruba in the World Cup qualification. The game in Oranjestad ended on Saturday in 0-6.
Due to new FIFA rules on players with double passports, Suriname has recently acquired a number of former youth internationals from the Dutch Juniors. For example, Kelvin Leerdam, Ryan Donk and Diego Biseswar were in the base for the team of national coach Dean Gorré on Saturday.
However, it was Nigel Hasselbaink who became the star. In his fourth international match, the attacker of the Israeli Sakhnin made three hits. Florian Jozefzoon of the English Rotherham and Roland Alberg of the Indian Hyderabad were also accurate, Francois Croes shot in his own goal on behalf of Aruba.
Suriname started World Cup qualification this week with a 3-0 win over the Cayman Islands and normally competes with Canada for the group win. The Canadians will play their second group match against the Cayman Islands on Sunday.
Only the group winners qualify for the second qualifying round of the North and Central American association CONCACAF. Only in the third round, when superpowers such as Mexico and the United States also enter, the World Cup tickets are distributed.
