At least 20 people were wounded, yesterday, in a suicide attack targeting the Makassar Cathedral in eastern Indonesia after the Palm Sunday Mass for Christians, and the Indonesian Minister responsible for coordinating security, Muhammad Mahfouz, announced that the suicide bombers were killed during the attack.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo strongly condemned this terrorist attack, saying that “terrorism is a crime against humanity, and I call on everyone to combat terrorism and extremism contrary to religious values.”
“There were two people on a motorcycle when the explosion occurred at the main entrance to the church, and the two enforcers were trying to enter the church campus,” said National Police spokesman Argo Yono.
Police announced that a security officer attempted to prevent the motorcycle from entering the Sacred Heart Cathedral, the headquarters of the Macassar Archdiocese, before the explosion that occurred after the mass.
“The mass is over and people were about to leave when the explosion happened,” the priest Willemos Tulac told reporters.
Several cars were damaged near the cathedral, where the police imposed a security cordon, according to an AFP photographer at the scene.
Churches had previously been the target of terrorist attacks in Indonesia, and in May 2018, about 10 people were killed in suicide attacks that targeted three churches in Surabaya, the second largest city in the archipelago.
For his part, the Pope of the Vatican, Pope Francis, said that he “prays for all victims of violence, especially the victims of the attack that took place in Indonesia in front of the Macassar Cathedral.”
Yesterday, the Pope presided over the Palm Sunday Mass before the start of the Holy Easter week, and performed the Angelus prayer in the presence of a small number of people who were invited to St. Peter’s Basilica. For the second time in a row, we are living in the context of an epidemic. ”
