The University of Groningen (RUG) – which announced earlier this week that it would not renew a cooperation contract with the Hanban organization – must now continue and also discontinue cooperation with the Confucius Institute. That is the opinion of one of the student factions in the University Council, the Free Student.
According to the students, it is staggering that the RUG is willing to continue with the Confucius Institute, even “after it was announced that it was stipulated in contracts that employees of this institute were not allowed to speak badly about the Chinese regime and that Chinese students felt unsafe”.
“It is part of Chinese law that the Chinese Communist Regime should not be talked about badly,” said party leader David Jan Meijer. “The university board has promised to abide by this in its contracts with the Chinese government. Then you do not take academic freedom seriously if you restrict your students and staff in their freedom in this way.”
