On Monday, the International Organization for Migration announced the rescue of about a thousand migrants and their return to Libya during the past 48 hours.
The organization’s office in Libya said in a tweet posted on its Twitter account that “the Libyan coast guard intercepted nearly a thousand immigrants and they were returned” to the Libyan shores.
United Nations agencies and NGOs have regularly expressed their condemnation of the return of migrants intercepted at sea to Libya, and of the conditions they live in in the detention centers where they are held.
The number of migrants rescued and returned to Libya since the beginning of this year has exceeded 5,000, according to United Nations relief agencies.
According to the statistics of the United Nations, more than 1,200 migrants died on average in 2020.
