The satirical current affairs program Sunday with Lubach ends: the very last episode can be seen on Sunday evening. NU.nl lists the best videos that went viral during the past thirteen seasons.
On April 3, 2020, Thijs van der Heide, the CEO of the online platform RUMAG, decided to step down immediately. He makes that decision after fuss about a controversial clothing line and a week full of negative publicity.
That commotion follows criticism in an item in the Sunday with Lubachbroadcast of March 29. RUMAG is accused of making money from Red Cross T-shirts. Van der Heide firmly denies the accusations, but the storm of criticism has not abated.
Wilders as an electronic pet
Lubach is launching in the run-up to the 2017 House of Representatives elections Kamergotchi, a variation on the digital game Tamagotchi (with which you have to keep a virtual pet alive). In the app, however, there are seventeen party leaders, including Mark Rutte (VVD) and Geert Wilders (PVV), who must be cared for and demand food, attention and knowledge.
When a particular party leader is in the news, the app user receives a message that ‘his’ Kamergotchi needed more attention. Hundreds of thousands of people download the app.
Pharaoh of the Netherlands
Lubach wants to become the first ‘Pharaoh of the Netherlands’ in 2015, as a playful protest against the monarchy. He starts a citizens’ initiative and quickly collects more than 40,000 signatures, the number needed to get a subject on the agenda of the House of Representatives.
Yet politics does not want to consider his request. “The title pharaoh is not a public law title or function and the House is not about the awarding of party titles,” the advisory committee said.
Let me introduce myself to Trump
Sunday with Lubach has gradually changed to the program it is today since its first episode on November 9, 2014. The editors needed the time to find out which method and program elements are the most successful. Experts call the introduction film about the Netherlands that Lubach made in season 6 for the recently sworn American President Donald Trump a turning point.
American-Dutch comedian Greg Shapiro imitates Trump and explains why the Netherlands should come second after the United States. The film is viewed more than 40 million times worldwide and its own versions are made in other European countries.
Lubach finds the solution for Belgium
Belgium will have a new federal government on September 30, 2020 after nearly 500 days of negotiations. In the end, the country was without a federal government for 493 days because the winners in Flanders and Wallonia did not want to work together.
In the Sunday with Lubachbroadcast of March 8, 2020, Lubach gives his own view on the troubled negotiations. The video of it is a great success on YouTube (almost two million streams), partly due to many Belgian viewers.
