Upfield’s margarine factory in Rotterdam will, if it is up to the producer, be closed in mid-2022. The staff was informed about the plans on Thursday, the CNV union reports. The production of Becel, Blue Band and Croma, among others, is moving abroad.
Upfield’s intended decision has already been submitted to the works council. About 150 people work at the factory in Rotterdam. “There have been some rumors around the company. In that respect, it is not entirely unexpected. But when you are all called together to hear that the factory is going to close, that is a hard message,” says union negotiator Diana Kraan. .
Upfield is the company behind the margarine branch that split from Unilever in 2018. According to the union, the butter and margarine will be produced elsewhere in Europe after 2022. The company is active worldwide with brands such as Bertolli, Flora and Rama.
