“Rest in peace dear Bibian, beloved mother, beloved daughter and beloved friend,” her family wrote in a post on her Instagram account.
“We will never forget you.”
She was treated for radiation before the Paralympics 2018 but still managed to take two golds.
27 years when the cancer was discovered
The chairman of the International Paralympic Committee, Andrew Parson, said in a statement:
– What Bibian Mentel-Spee did for parasport and parasnowboard is immeasurable. Words simply cannot do her or her accomplishments justice.
Mentel-Spee has been battling cancer for over 20 years. She was only 27 years old when she was first diagnosed and treated 15 more times for cancer.
In 2002, she got the cancer back in her tibia and was then forced to amputate the leg just below the knee.
After a back operation in 2019, she lost the feeling in her lower body. Earlier in March, she announced that she had been diagnosed with a serious brain tumor.
