The suspect is a man known to law enforcement and has a criminal record, said Police Sgt. Vancouver Criminal PolicyFrank Jang in a briefing, without giving further clarification.

The attack, which occurred in an affluent and quiet neighborhood in the north of the city bordered by the Pacific, shocked police and witnesses. “To say the least, it is absolutely shocking,” Sergeant Jang told AFP. “For everyone, including the police themselves.”

“He was acting completely random.”

“It’s shocking,” I agreed. Justin Prasad, who works in front of the library. According to him, the alleged perpetrator appeared to act randomly. “It was a bit unreal, especially since (he was acting) completely random,” he added.

“After he stabbed people near the library, it was chaos, I saw him face to face with the police, then he ran away, the police chased him, they cornered him and pinned him to the ground,” he said.

The CTV channel broadcast a video Saturday night showing the arrest of the suspect, who appears to stab himself in the leg before collapsing and being arrested by several police officers.

Sergeant Jang asked the authors of the images to pass them on to investigators instead of posting them on social media.

Another witness, Sheila Dyson, told CTV that he saw a man stab a woman. According to her, there appeared to be no connection between the victims and the assault seemed to occur “randomly.”

The first Minister Justin trudeau and several members of the government reacted immediately in Twitter. “My thoughts are with Vancouver Nord tonight,” commented the head of government. “Let all those affected by the violent incident in Lynn Valley know that Canadians are thinking of them and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Andrew Cocking, a businessman who lives 500 meters from the library, said the attack took place in a generally very quiet area.

“I have seen people treated by the emergency services and placed on stretchers. It was sad, especially since one of the victims appeared to be a child,” he said.

“It happened very close. My father was in the library 30 minutes before the attack and he was thinking of going to get a book. It is sad that these people were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he added.
