The Public Prosecution Service (OM) sees insufficient basis for further criminal prosecution of the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM). According to the Public Prosecution Service, there is no evidence of deliberate criminal behavior by the largest gas winner in the Netherlands. The criminal prosecution of the NAM must therefore be stopped, says the OM.
The OM concludes after “intensive investigation” that there is no evidence that the homes of residents in North Groningen have been damaged by the gas extraction to such an extent that they were in danger of their lives, according to the OM.
The case was brought in early 2017 by the action group Groninger Bodem Beweging and some individuals from the province of Groningen who believed that the gas extraction had led to a life-threatening situation. At the time, the court ruled that an investigation into the provability had not been carried out, and ordered the Public Prosecution Service to conduct this investigation, so that it could be definitively assessed whether prosecution of the NAM should take place.
