In Guyana, all adults can be vaccinated against Covid-19. A prospect that would have encouraged dozens of Brazilians to cross the border illegally in order to benefit from this treatment.
The border between Guyana and Brazil may be closed, but that hasn’t stopped some Brazilians from trying to cross it illegally. Joining the French department can indeed allow them to be vaccinated against Covid-19, the vaccination campaign being open to all adults. “Not long ago we were surprised by a massive influx of Brazilians,” explains Major Christophe Revoux, of the border police. “On vaccination days, we will be present as long as it takes.”
The Guyanese vaccine strategy has been changed in order to cope with the spread of the Brazilian variant. All adults can now enjoy it, without age limit. “I work in the transport of people, I am in contact with a lot of people every day and that’s why, for me, it’s better to be immune”, justifies a Brazilian woman who could be vaccinated. Like her, only about fifty people were allowed to cross the Oyapock River for an injection.
