On Thursday, April 1, it will be exactly twenty years ago that same-sex couples can get married in the Netherlands. The majority of the Utrecht city council therefore wanted a large rainbow flag to be hung on the Dom Tower. However, this is not possible for security reasons.
Mayor Sharon Dijksma does marry a same-sex couple that day to make the day festive.
At the time, the Netherlands was the first country in the world to open civil marriage to persons of the same sex. To celebrate that, the rainbow flag will be hoisted at the municipal offices in Utrecht anyway.
The parties PvdA, GroenLinks, D66, Student & Starter, SP, Party for the Animals, CDA, VVD and PVV asked Alderman Linda Voortman on Thursday whether the rainbow flag could be hung on the Dom Tower.
According to alderman Linda Voortman, safety regulations prohibit anything from being hung on the scaffolding in which the Dom Tower is currently covered due to a major renovation. However, the rainbow flag is hoisted in the top.
