Morocco has qualified for the Africa Cup on Friday without taking action. ‘The Lions of the Atlas’ secured their participation in the final tournament thanks to a draw between Burundi and the Central African Republic (2-2).
Morocco leads its qualifying group with ten points from four games and can no longer be overtaken by number three Mauritania, which is on five points. The best two countries in each group qualify for the Africa Cup.
Later in the day, Morocco will visit Mauritania. In Nouakchott, the team of national coach Vahid Halilhodzic can also secure the group win. The lead over Burundi, which has played one more game, is five points.
In the past period, several Eredivisie players belonged to the selection of Morocco. For example, Zakaria Aboukhlal from AZ and Ajax players Noussair Mazraoui, Zakaria Labyad and Oussama Idrissi received an invitation. Hakim Ziyech and the brothers Nordin and Sofyan Amrabat were also regularly called up.
In the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco survived the group stage, but the team stranded in the eighth finals (2019) and the quarter finals (2017). Only in 1976 did the North African country win the tournament.
The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Cameroon in January and February 2022. The tournament was supposed to be held early this year, but was postponed by a year due to the corona pandemic.
