Michel-Edouard Leclerc remembers fears of shortages

The boss of supermarkets Michel-Edouard Leclerc publishes “The essentials of the Republic, how the Covid-19 has changed the consumption of the French”. A year after the rushes of the French in the shelves of toilet paper, he returns to the microphone of Anne Roumanoff on this event which punctuated the distressing news of March 2020.

INTERVIEWIn his book The essentials of the Republic, how the Covid-19 has changed the consumption of the French, Michel-Edouard Leclerc tells how the Covid-19 crisis has transformed the retail sector and French society as a whole. Guest of the show It feels good, the supermarket boss remembers the unjustified panic that took some French people in March 2020, pushing them to rush to the shelves of pasta and toilet paper for fear of shortage.

“A few days before the first confinement, it was really nonsense,” recalls Michel-Edouard Leclerc, who adds that it was sometimes “very nasty”. “There were also many acts of incivility, even if we minimize them in the media,” he reveals. “In reality, it was hot. There are people who would go crazy when they went to get toilet paper.”

“Public service can be efficient when it wants”

Michel-Edouard Leclerc remembers the spirits that were heated at the entrance and in the stores, to the point that his teams sometimes had to put security guards around certain departments. But it was only when he had to go and say on the set of the JT of France 2 that there was no risk of shortage that he perceived “the tension” linked to the virus.

“We were put a thermometer on our forehead when we entered, all the cameramen had masks. And we did not have any. Neither for us, nor for our cashiers, nor in the stores,” he compares . “There, I said to myself that the public service can still be efficient when it wants.” He then understands the prevailing atmosphere of crisis. “This is where I felt that we had to really put an end to and explain to the French that there were stocks at Panzani and Lustucru for until the summer.” Michel-Edouard Leclerc will then multiply the videos in this direction.
