Judoka Geke van den Berg took bronze on Saturday at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Georgia. The 25-year-old Gelderse reached the semifinals in the weight class up to 63 kilograms with three victories, in which she had to lose against Junxia Yang from China.
In the battle for bronze, Van den Berg was too strong for Szofi Ozbas. With more than a minute left and already ahead, Van den Berg threw the Hungarian on the back in the empty judo hall in Georgia.
Van den Berg picked up silver in Tbilisi two years ago. She then had to lose in the final against her compatriot Sanne Vermeer, who is now missing from Tbilisi. The Dutch judo association has already designated Juul Franssen in this weight class to participate in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
In the class up to 70 kilograms, Donja Vos and Margit de Voogd, who both made their Grand Slam debut, were quickly eliminated. The only male Dutch participant, Tornike Tsjakadoea, lost the battle for bronze in the class up to 60 kilograms on Friday. On Sunday, Karen Stevenson and Natascha Ausma will still compete in the category up to 78 kilograms.
Most Dutch top judokas are missing from the Georgian capital because they are already focusing on the European Championship in mid-April. That is the last opportunity to force qualification for the Games.
