US President Joe Biden told journalists on Thursday that he expects to make a bid for a second term in 2024. During his campaign, the 78-year-old world leader insisted he was just a “bridge candidate” who could beat Donald Trump.
“Yes, my plan is to be reelected. That’s my expectation,” said the Democrat. He also expects Kamala Harris to be his vice president again in 2024. According to Biden, she is a great partner.
The president stressed on Thursday that he will be there for the long term, as long as “fate” has no other plans for him. By this he was probably referring to his advanced age. Biden was the oldest president ever at his inauguration in January. “I have a lot of respect for fate, so I can hardly plan three and a half years ahead.”
Last year, Biden had to compete in debates against much younger candidates for the Democratic Party nomination. At the time, the president marketed himself as a candidate who could defeat Trump and then hand over the baton to the next generation. Experts also assumed so far that Vice President Harris would follow in his footsteps after an initial term.
Biden’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent weeks due to the pace at which the US is vaccinating people against the coronavirus and the approval in parliament of a nearly $ 2 trillion bailout package.
Yet Biden has also been criticized for the way in which migrants from Latin America are handled along the southern border. Tens of thousands of minors are still there without parents in overcrowded reception centers.
