Joe Biden announced Thursday, March 25, that he was considering running for the 2024 US presidential election. “The answer is yes, I plan to run for re-election. That’s what I expect”, said the 78-year-old US head of state during his first White House press conference. While he had so far avoided giving such a direct answer, the Democrat qualified his answer by affirming to respect “destiny”. “I could never plan with certainty four and a half, three and a half years in advance.”

Does he expect to face Donald Trump? “Oh, really. I don’t even think about it, I have no idea. I have no idea who will represent the Republican Party, (…) and you?”, he said.

When asked if he would choose VP Kamala Harris as running mate again, Joe Biden replied: “I absolutely expect that to be the case. She’s doing a great job. She’s a great partner.” The 56-year-old former senator and former prosecutor of California is herself among the candidates already approached for the presidential election of November 2024. She had run in 2019 for the Democratic primary, but had thrown in the towel before the first votes in early 2020.
