In Mozambique, the port city of Palma, in the northeast of the country, ended up falling Saturday in the hands of jihadist fighters who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, after several days of fighting. A surprise attack was launched on Wednesday, causing hundreds of people to flee. According to security sources, the fighting continues in the area despite everything.

<p>The situation in Palma is uncertain tonight. But security sources quoted by AFP admit that the city has indeed fallen into the hands of jihadist commandos who suddenly went on the attack on Wednesday, after weeks of lull.

« Almost everything was destroyed and a lot of people died », Explains the employee of the gas site controlled by the company Total, located ten kilometers away. It should be noted, however, that telephone communications are scrambled by the authorities, which makes verifying the facts very difficult: most of the information comes from people who have managed to flee.

And these witnesses tell three days of terror, faced with the violence and the scale of the attack. As of Wednesday, hundreds of people fled into the forest, others took refuge in the enclosure of the gas site or in a nearby hotel, the Amarula hotel. Evacuation operations were then organized by trucks and boats, but many evacuees fell into deadly ambushes, reports Reuters.

It has been three years now since the group dubbed Al-Shabab – as in Somalia – carried out attacks in the Muslim province of Cabo Delgado, a province rich in natural gas on the border with Tanzania. The Palma attack is the most destructive and the most spectacular so far.
