franceinfo: The Scientific Council has returned the ball to the government to take the “eminently political” decision whether or not to postpone the regional and departmental elections scheduled for June. What do you think ?
Jean-Claude Gaudin: I’m pretty much in favor of at least delaying it until the fall. In the midst of a pandemic like now, where it is getting worse and worse, I do not see how we can encourage people to come and vote. They will not come to vote and that is a shame. I think we can maybe save three months. More than that, I don’t know if the Constitutional Council would accept it. In the municipal elections, we had the mask, the freezing, all the precautions, nevertheless the abstention had been considerable and this distorts democracy.
Who will you support at the regional and departmental level?
I will support my friends. And my friends are Martine Vassal for the department and Renaud Muselier for the region.
Xavier Bertrand, the president (ex-LR) of Hauts-de-France formalized last week his candidacy for the 2022 presidential election on a line of “social and popular right”. Could you vote for him?
He is someone I know well, who was an excellent Minister of Health. My background is quite similar to that of Xavier Bertrand. We made ourselves all alone. We have climbed the ladder of political life one after the other. Nothing was given to us by inheritance. He is someone for whom I have a lot of sympathy but I belong to a political formation. I will wait to see what will be the attitude of the LR formation to which I belong before deciding.
Should we organize a primary on the right?
I am not in favor of it. Between the two rounds, you cannot pick up the pieces of the oppositions from the first round and the addition is not done well. This has happened in the past both on the left and on the Republican right, so I’m not very supportive of the primary.
