Jean-Paul Hamon, general practitioner in Clamart, in the Paris region, and honorary president of the Federation of Doctors of France returns today to this question that we hear a lot among the French: can I get vaccinated, am I eligible?
franceinfo: Do your patients find their way there, because it is getting a bit complicated, vaccination? Now, those over 70 can come and be vaccinated. Isn’t it a little bit complicated for patients today?
Jean-Paul Hamon: It’s a bit complicated, even for us, because already, we, with AstraZeneca’s vaccines, had made appointments, and there, we have to see if those who have made an appointment are still eligible. So good for the AstraZeneca for sure is people who are over 55 years old. And then the 70-year-olds as well, as you said, but there are also people over 50 with co-morbidities.
Personally, I would have added in the priority people, the teachers, all the teachers, whatever the age. Because we realize that with the English variant that is currently circulating, it is still necessary to limit the circulation of the variant in schools.
In your opinion, should children even be vaccinated?
So on this, I believe that we do not yet have studies showing the value of vaccination in children. It is better to vaccinate those who are most at risk of severe forms. I remind you that the real problem of limiting this pandemic is not to overcrowd hospitals. And we can see that already, in Île de France, we are in an extremely tense period, especially in intensive care, and it is imperative to vaccinate people who risk developing serious forms.
This Saturday, therefore, those over 70 will be able to access vaccination. I imagine you’re going to have a lot of requests, a lot of patients?
In this case, it is clear that there are many who are impatiently waiting to be vaccinated. We have phone calls from colleagues who have people who are more or less at risk, or more or less worried. And therefore, what we are looking forward to above all is the quantity of vaccines so that we can vaccinate without age limit, comorbidity, etc. Because clearly, the period when the French were reluctant to be vaccinated is far behind us. Now almost everyone will be vaccinated. Even the most reluctant.
