Iran has concluded with China, Saturday March 27, a strategic and commercial cooperation agreement with mysterious outlines, after several years of discussions. This “25-year strategic cooperation pact” was signed by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on a visit to Tehran.

Outlines and details of the agreement have yet to be revealed. All that is known about the document signed by the two ministers is that, according to Tehran, it is a “complete roadmap”, comprising “political, strategic and economic clauses” for “25 years of cooperation”.

The signing of this pact illustrates the priority given to relations with “ballast” (that is to say for Iran, states like China, the two Koreas, India, Japan or Russia) in accordance with the inflection given by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in 2018, in break with one of the most popular slogans of the Iranian revolution of 1979: “Neither West nor East, Islamic Republic.”
