Insurer Achmea fires half of its employees in claims settlement | NOW

The insurer Achmea puts 240 employees on the street who handle damage claims. That is about half of the 486 currently working there. More digitization and flexibility are the basis of the decision, a spokesperson told NU.nl on Thursday.

There are two reasons for the decision, says Marco Simmers of Achmea. “On the one hand, more and more claims are processed automatically, so that we need less physical staff, and on the other hand there are many people with permanent contracts while we often have peaks and troughs. In January there were almost no settlements, but February was a terrible busy month due to snow damage, which is why we want to work more with flexible employees. ”

Achmea was founded in 1811 in the Netherlands and is active in the Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, Slovakia, Canada and Australia. Last year, the insurer achieved a turnover of 20 billion euros and an operating result of 630 million euros. That is an increase of 15 percent compared to 2019. Assets under management rose by 41 percent to 227 billion euros last year.

Achmea is not alone in rethinking its business operations. The bank ING also announced on Wednesday that it is closing more than half of its branches, causing 440 people to lose their jobs.
