Sorry. German Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted on Wednesday March 24 that she had “a mistake” by wanting to tighten up the anti-Covid health rules in Germany for the long Easter weekend and confirmed the abandonment of this project which had provoked criticism from all sides. On Monday, she announced the extension of the current restrictions as well as the ban on holiday rentals at Easter throughout the country, the closure of shops and religious ceremonies by videoconference for a period of five days.

“An error must be called an error and, more importantly, it must be corrected and if possible in time. I know that this proposal has caused further uncertainty, I deeply regret it and for that I ask forgiveness from all citizens”, said the Chancellor in a speech after an emergency meeting with the leaders of the German region states.

Deemed insufficient by scientists, the “break” planned for Easter was criticized from all sides, associations of traders fearing its economic consequences for Christians, deprived of Easter mass “face to face”. Transforming Thursday, April 1, a working day, into a public holiday also created difficulties in the organization of working time, noted several organizations and elected officials.
