On Friday, fighting broke out on the front line in the Donbass, in the locality of Choumy, north-east of Donetsk. According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Forces, the pro-Russian separatists attacked their positions with mortar fire, and heavy machine gun fire, which killed four soldiers and injured two.
Ukrainian president fears another outbreak of violence
This is the most serious death toll since a ceasefire, which was established in eastern Ukraine, last August. But since mid-February, the fighting has intensified and in the space of a month, around 20 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. This situation which echoes a worsening of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced an escalation in the Donbass. He calls on the French and German partners to intervene, within the Normandy format, in order to prevent a new outbreak of the conflict.
