Jackie Groenen played for the first time with the women of Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Orange international contributed with an assist to the 2-0 win over West Ham United in the Super League.
Usually the women’s team plays its matches in the Leigh Sports Village, but the stadium was available due to the international period in men’s football. Due to the corona rules, the 76,000 seats in the stands remained empty.
Man United is the second English club to have the women’s team play in its stadium. Tottenham Hotspur did that before during international matches. A record number of more than 38,000 people attended a game between the women of Tottenham and Arsenal at the end of 2019.
Greens assisted in the second hit by the American Christian Press on Saturday. English Lauren James had opened the score on behalf of the home team and is entering the history books as the first woman to score at Old Trafford.
The Greens team is third in the Super League, behind league leaders Chelsea and Manchester City. As the last player, West Ham must fear relegation.
