Germany will impose from midnight on Tuesday the presentation of a negative PCR test to all travelers who enter the country regardless of the airport of origin, Health Minister Jens Spahn reported today, while appealing to the citizen to reduce social contacts and mobility to the extreme in the face of the virulence of the third wave of the pandemic that the country is already facing.
“The next few weeks will be very tough. The healthcare system could be on the brink of collapse in April“warned the minister in the press conference that he offers on Fridays together with the president of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Lothar Wieler. The projections of this entity, responsible for the surveillance of diseases infections, contemplate up to 100,000 daily infections after Easter holidays.
The imposition of the obligatory nature of a negative test prior to traveling to Germany was born from the controversy that arose as a result of the trips to Mallorca while the nationals were subjected to restrictions and the fear of importing new cases.
The entry into force of these tests was scheduled for the night from Sunday to Monday but it has decided to delay due to logistical reasons and give more time to the airlines.
However, the Monday meeting of the committee of experts created by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health and Interior to update the list of countries and regions at risk based on epidemiological data sent to Berlin by the different German embassies continues. According to information not confirmed by Spahn in his press conference, France to be declared a “high incidence” country on Monday. That means negative test and quarantine for travelers from the neighboring country.
The incidence of Covid-19 in Germany is bullish despite the restrictions imposed and the vaccination campaign underway due, among other reasons, to the British variant, the most infectious of those detected in Europe and already predominant. In just one week, the incidence rate of Covid-19 has gone from 70 to 119.
“Cases are increasing and in the last 24 hours they were 21,573, about 4,000 more than seven days ago. The number of deaths remained in the range of 200 but that may change“Wieler warned in a dramatic appeal to the population.” This is not a third wave, but a new pandemic. There will be more sick people and many people will die, “he said.
Wieler and Spahn admitted that there is no miraculous weapon to combat the spread of Covid-19 and its mutations beyond reducing contacts and mobility, which is why they insisted on the recommendation not to travel either inside or outside the country, make use of of the network of PCR, antigen and rapid tests that is being woven at the federal level and not to waste vaccination.
Currently, 12 million people in Germany have been inoculated with the first dose of available vaccines, which represents 10% of the population. With the second it was 4.4%. The data are low for a country that is presumed for its economic potential easy access to vaccines but is in line with its European partners.
Spahn hopes to hit cruising speed starting next month, when 15 million doses of vaccines are expected to be received. They are more than in the first trimester and the first to receive them will be those over 70 years of age, people with chronic diseases and certain work groups.
Germany confirmed this Friday that it is willing to use the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against Covid-19, but if it is approved before by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
