Facebook freezes the page of the Venezuelan President due to misinformation about COVID-19 – Politics – News

Facebook announced Saturday that it had “frozen” the page of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for a month after repeated violations of the platform’s rules to combat disinformation related to COVID-19.

A Facebook spokesperson said, “Due to repeated violations of our rules, we freeze the page for a period of 30 days, during which it will be available for reading only,” meaning the account will remain open and visible, but it will not be able to post comments or other materials for a month.

He explained that Facebook had removed a video clip from Maduro’s page “for violating our policies against disinformation about COVID-19 that could expose people to harm.”
Maduro promoted what he said was a “miracle” cure for Covid-19, as he had previously done for other treatments whose efficacy had not been proven.

And Facebook quoted in a statement, on guidance from the World Health Organization, that “there are currently no treatments for the virus.”

Venezuela began vaccinating health workers in February.

The country has recorded nearly 155,000 coronavirus infections and more than 1,500 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Opposition spokesmen in Venezuela say the actual numbers could be much higher.

Finally, the authorities became concerned about the rapid rise in the number of infections and the emergence of a highly contagious Brazilian mutated version of the virus
