Excelsior spills expensive points with a loss against Helmond in the battle for play-offs | NOW

Excelsior ran into a heavy home defeat in the Kitchen Champion Division on Sunday. The team from Rotterdam lost 0-3 against Helmond Sport on their own field.

Dean van der Sluys opened the score in the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium after an hour. Excelsior could still hope for a point, but in the final phase Jordy Thomassen and Arno Van Keilegom secured the three points for Helmond Sport.

With the fifteenth league loss of the season, Excelsior lost expensive points in the battle for a place in the play-offs for promotion to the Eredivisie. The team of coach Marinus Dijkhuizen is tenth and is eight points behind number eight Roda JC, who also played a game less.

The numbers three to eight normally participate in the play-offs for promotion. The top two teams are promoted directly to the Eredivisie. Helmond Sport is eleventh and has one point less than Excelsior.

Later in the day there are two more games scheduled in the Kitchen Champion Division with Roda JC-SC Cambuur (4.45 p.m.) and NAC Breda-De Graafschap (8 p.m.).

Helmond Sport celebrates Dean van der Sluys’ opening goal.
