The big winners of the Edison Popp Prizes are DI-RECT and Eefje de Visser. The DI-RECT men have won the Song and Rock awards and Eefje de Visser has won the Album and Alternative award.
The winners of the Edison Pop were determined by the jury a few weeks ago. The Edisons for Album and Song are considered the most important categories. In the Album category, Eefje de Visser won with her album Bitterzoet. She beat Kevin with Animal Stories and Typhoon with Lichthuis. In the Song category, DI-RECT won with the ‘corona song’ Soldier On. The band beat Racoon with It’s Late Anyway.
Actor Bilal Wahib would receive the Newcomer award for his hit single Tigers. However, the Edison Foundation decided on Thursday to decline the award after all the fuss that has arisen after Wahib asked a minor boy to show his genitals in a live stream.
Davina Michelle, Lucas & Steve, Sophie Street, and Rob de Nijs, among others, were also among the winners. Rob de Nijs won in the Dutch-speaking category. The 78-year-old singer, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, did not expect to win and believes it will also be the last time he will receive the prestigious music award. Partly for this reason, De Nijs, who leaves Emma Heesters and Miss Montreal behind, thought it was extra special this time. “It’s my sixth Edison and it has to be my best,” the singer tells it ANP. “I never thought I would win another one. When I won my first in 1964 I also thought it would be my last, but it is very special that you win with a record that was made in the middle of corona time” .
The Edisons have been awarded since 1960. This happens in the classical, jazz and pop genre. The prize, consisting of a bronze statuette by sculptor Pieter d’Hont, is also known as the Dutch Grammy. It was announced on Friday morning that rap duo The Opposites received the Oeuvre Prize this year.
