“Do not donate blood because I am with another man”

Following an investigation by the National Board of Health and Welfare, it was decided that from 1 May 2021, the withdrawal period for blood donation for men who have sex with men will be reduced from twelve months to six months. Not enough, according to the organization Rainbow Blood, which states three main reasons why the qualifying period requirement should be lowered further.

– First and foremost, we have anemia. Then it’s about patient safety. A precautionary principle can only be so safe while knowledge-based blood donation rules are much safer. And then it is important for the signal value towards young LGBTQ people. Where an authority says that if you live out your sexuality, you have a risky behavior, says Ström.

Looking at an individual assessment

According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, the issue has not been fully investigated.

– Therefore, we sent a request to the government to proceed with a special investigation. We also want to look at a more individual assessment when it comes to sexual risk exposure, and there we have a dialogue with the Swedish Public Health Agency, says Pär Ödman, General Counsel at the National Board of Health and Welfare.
