The European Football Association (UEFA) announced today that on April 19, it will take its decision on the new system for the Champions League competition, starting from the year 2024, which would bring about the biggest change in the continental tournament in the last twenty years. The continental authority said in a statement that “the future of club competitions beyond 2024 will be one of the topics that will be discussed” tomorrow, during the meeting of the Executive Committee, which was revealed by the European Leagues League last week.
“The official decision on this issue will be taken at the next meeting of the Executive Committee,” scheduled for April 19, in order to finalize some details, the statement added. It is promising that this meeting will be creamy, as the continental federation will make its decision on the postponed European Cup from last summer to the period between June 11 and July 11 next, in 12 cities across the old continent, as it will withdraw hosting from any city that refuses to receive the masses categorically in Stadiums.
One of the possible changes includes increasing the number of participating clubs from 32 to 36 and changing the currently adopted group stage system, which divides clubs into eight groups of four teams. According to the proposed system, the clubs would play a “mini-championship” in one group, with each team playing 10 matches instead of the current six.
It is expected that one of the four new seats will be awarded to the French League, while one of the main points of controversy will be how to decide on the other three seats. The European Clubs Association prefers to grant new seats to champions from other leagues, while there is also a tendency to give them to clubs according to their classification in the continental federation, which would prefer clubs that have a history in Europe but are suffering locally.
