Michael de Leeuw will play for FC Groningen again from next season. The 34-year-old attacker is transfer-free from FC Emmen and signs a one-year contract with the ‘Pride of the North’, with the option of another season.
After that period, De Leeuw will be given the opportunity to follow a trainer course and become active within the FC Groningen training course.
He also played for FC Groningen between 2012 and 2016. He played a total of 137 official matches for the club, scoring 55 goals.
Technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus worked hard for De Leeuw to return. “Michael has demonstrated throughout his career that he has mastered a very important part of football: scoring goals,” said Fledderus. “He has the gift of being in the right place at the right time and being important with his goals.”
“Besides his goals, Michael was a crowd favorite at FC Groningen because he puts a lot of energy into his game.
After his first period at FC Groningen, De Leeuw started an adventure at MLS club Chicago Fire. After two years in the United States, he returned to the Eredivisie at FC Emmen in mid-2019. For the Drenten he has so far scored 52 duels and seventeen goals.
FC Groningen is working on a strong season and currently occupies sixth place in the Eredivisie.
