Portugal coach Fernando Santos spoke about the referee contacting after the Serbia game.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo thought on Saturday night he had once again become the hero of his country, but was eventually disappointed heavily.
The World Cup qualifier against Serbia was 2-2 at the end of extra time when Ronaldo’s shot crossed the opponent’s finish line.
However, the Serbian player quickly slipped the ball out of the goal and the referee did not accept the match.
Ronaldo could not comprehend the referee’s decision and ran directly in front of the assistant referee to protest loudly and theatrically. In the end, the judge Danny Makkelie raised a yellow card for Ronaldo.
Ronaldo took his place on the field before the final whistle and threw his captain’s strap into the grass of Belgrade’s football stadium.
In the World Cup qualifiers there is no VAR video judging system or goal line technology in place, but TV images revealed Ronaldo was right.
Head coach of Portugal Fernando Santos said Makkelie watched the slowdowns after the match and admitted he made a mistake.
– The judge apologized to me and said he was ashamed, Santos said ASaccording to the magazine.
With the draw, Portugal and Serbia share the top spot in World Cup qualifier group A. Each country has scored four points from two matches.
