chocolate makers hope to avoid “the bad experience of last year”

At one week from Easter, the chocolate makers are crossing their fingers. This time of year, the second in terms of turnover after the holiday season, is a must for professionals. In the 19 departments affected by the partial containment, chocolate stores remain authorized to open, but owners are still worried about the impact of health restrictions which threaten the 20% of annual turnover they achieve at this occasion. The reopening of businesses in December saved Christmas sales and they hope it will be the same with Easter, unlike 2020.

“This year, customers are anticipating”

As this essential weekend approaches, the goal is first to erase the nightmare of Easter 2020, disrupted by the Covid-19. A year ago, many chocolatiers, like Anne-Françoise Benoît, had to close their stores. This time, its three stores (one in Paris, the other two in Angers) will be open, but the health context, in the capital, in particular, is still giving it a few cold sweats. “We already had the bad experience last year. But it’s true that we have to live positively. We are moving forward, and we say to ourselves that anyway, even in confinement, people will need chocolates, so we have prepared for this. ”

Manufacturing started a month ago, as soon as Valentine’s Day passed. Seasonal workers have been recruited, bringing the workforce to 23 people. Everything is ready for the Easter rush. But the boss anticipates that the crowd will not take place. She records many orders in advance and thinks that, this time, customers will stagger their visit to collect their purchases. “In a period like Easter, we traditionally saw sales take place especially over a long weekend: Easter Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a large flow of customers,” she explains. “This year, customers are anticipating so as not to generate a crowd in the store.”
