The head coach of the Russian national football team, Stanislav Cherchesov, after defeating Slovenia in the 2022 World Cup qualifying match, explained why he had given a place in the starting lineup to veteran Yuri Zhirkov, and not less-aged Vyacheslav Karavaev.
“Zhirkov is more experienced and judicious, at the beginning of the match his calmness and experience were required. In the second half, Yuri got tired – and Karavaev came out. At this moment, mobility was needed, it was necessary to block the zones, not to allow the same Josip Ilicic to unfold. Zhirkov had not played for a long time, so it was difficult for him to spend 90 minutes on the field. We are glad that he is here and helped us win, ”said the specialist.
Earlier, Cherchesov admitted that the Russian national team was preparing for the match with Slovenia as a game for six points.
