Sven Botman and Cody Gakpo seem ready for a basic place with the Dutch Juniors in the European Championship match against Young Germany. The duo fully participated in the final training session for the second group match at the European Championships in Hungary and Slovenia on Friday.
Botman and Gakpo started on the bench in the first group match against Romania (1-1) as a precaution. Botman stayed there the entire game, while Gakpo came in in the last half hour. However, he couldn’t change the tie anymore.
Both now seem fit enough for a starting place against Germany. Botman will probably take the place of Jordan Teze in the center of the back. Gakpo is the possible replacement for Justin Kluivert or Myron Boadu in the front.
21-year-old Botman is one of the revelations this season at the French Lille, which is on a level with leader Paris Saint-Germain after thirty games. Botman was recently eliminated by Ajax in the Europa League with Lille.
Gakpo (21) had a strong first half of the season at PSV, but at the beginning of January the winger injured his ankle, which meant he was out for two months. In the last two games of PSV, against Feyenoord and AZ, Gakpo played another half. National coach Erwin van de Looi did not consider him fit enough for three games in a week.
Due to the draw against Romania, the Juniors can use a three-pointer against Germany. The Germans won their first match against Hungary 3-0.
Cody Gakpo seems to be heading for a starting place against Germany.
