Blokker expects problems due to blockade Suez Canal, Action less concerned | NOW

The congestion of the Suez Canal can be felt in our country. Retail chains that import a lot of goods from abroad can get into trouble as a result. Blokker is convinced that it will have an impact, Action does not see any difficulties in the short term.

A spokesperson for Action informs that no delivery problems should arise in the coming weeks. “All articles for the coming weeks are already in stock at our distribution centers. Our logistics are set up in such a way that we can properly handle short disruptions”, it sounds.

In the longer term, it will depend on how long the ship will block the route, but half of the products at Action do not come from China and are therefore not directly affected by the situation. “We also have some flexibility due to our varying range,” says Action.

‘There will still be delays even after the ship has been detached’

It is a different story at Mirage Retail Group, the parent company of Blokker, Intertoys and BCC. “If the blockade continues for a long time, we will certainly suffer from it,” says CEO Michiel Witteveen. According to him, there are a number of ships in a traffic jam with goods intended for the three chains.

Mirage is now investigating which items are involved and whether it is necessary to have products fly in. For now, however, there are no immediate problems, he says.

Witteveen also expects that the delay will not be resolved when the boat is detached. Since the ports will fill up with ships, he expects new congestion when unloading containers.

In the meantime, the recovery company Smit Salvage, a subsidiary of the Dutch Boskalis, is busy pulling out the boat. Boskalis CEO Peter Berdowski said earlier this week that it could still take weeks before the rescue operation is over.
