Kiki Bertens is still without a win after her third match in 2021. The number eleven in the world in the second round of the WTA tournament in Miami again in two sets. Arantxa Rus was eliminated by Maria Sakkari.
Qualifier Liudmila Samsonova (WTA-126) left Bertens no chance on the hard court in Florida. The Russian won after 56 minutes: 6-2 and 6-1.
Bertens, who had a bye in the first round, made only six points in the entire match in the service game of the 22-year-old Samsonova
The Wes returned to the WTA Tour early this month after being out of circulation for five months due to surgery on an Achilles tendon. The 29-year-old Dutch also lost her first matches in Qatar and Dubai in straight sets. After three matches in 2021, she is only on (seven) games won.
Rus also does not take a set in the second round
Rus also did not take a set in her second round match against Sakkari. After fifteen minutes she had to congratulate her opponent: 2-6 and 3-6.
Rus (WTA-84) did not create a single breakpoint, while Sakkari (WTA-25) had no fewer than twelve break opportunities in the service games of the Dutch. The Greek used four.
The South Holland player settled in the first round of the prestigious hard court tournament in Florida with the Czech Marie Bouzková (WTA-47). That was her second win of 2021.
With a victory by Rus and Bertens, the two Dutch women had played against each other in the third round.
Naomi Osaka won her first match in Miami.
Osaka wins first game since Australian Open
Naomi Osaka reached the third round by beating the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic: 7-6 (3) and 6-4. It was her first performance for the Japanese number two in the world since she won the final of the Australian Open more than a month ago.
“After not playing for quite a while I was a bit nervous,” said Osaka. “I made the wrong choice far too often. Maybe I would not have made it if there had been a third set. Fortunately I managed to prevent that.”
